Three caveats before you quote any of this:

  • The one "overlap" is a trap. Both publish a "SWE-Bench Pro" number (80.3% vs 55.4%), but the V4 Pro figure is DeepSeek's own harness run with zero third-party replication. Same test name, different trust levels. The SWE-Bench Verified 80.6% is a different, easier test set than Fable 5's SWE-Bench Pro — do not compare them directly.
  • V4 Pro's numbers are for the top reasoning setting. They come from "Thinking Max" (the Pro Max mode). At default or lower effort, expect less.
  • DeepSeek itself says V4 trails frontier models by ~3–6 months. That's the vendor's own honesty, and it matches the everyday-vs-frontier split below.

  • Frontier agentic coding: 80.3% SWE-Bench Pro is the highest published score for a public model, official and unrefuted since June 9. V4 Pro's counter-claims are self-reported only.
  • Long-horizon autonomy: Fable 5 was built for multi-day agent runs at 1M context with file memory; V4 Pro's endurance at that scale is exactly what no one has verified.
  • Vision: charts, screenshots, dense PDFs — V4 Pro is text-only until H2 2026.
  • The safety gate: Anthropic's safeguard classifiers and its handling of the suspension are what a compliance department can build a case around. Open weights have no server-side gate — which is the point, and the risk.
