Anthropic Fable 5 — the June 22 billing timeline

Fable 5's launch week was not a straight line: a free included window, a worldwide suspension, a July 1 restoration, and a reset billing schedule. This page maps every era so you know what changed and what stayed.

TL;DR

Fable 5 launched June 9, 2026 with a included access window through June 22 (extended after suspension). Export controls suspended it June 12–July 1. After restoration, Anthropic reset the included window to July 7, then moved Fable 5 to usage credits. The model never left the API — only the no-extra-cost access ended.

Key dates in the Fable 5 billing story

From launch window to credits — every pivot that moved the billing schedule.

  • June 9–22 launch window (original plan)

Fable 5 launched globally with included access on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans — up to 50% of weekly usage at no extra cost. Original plan: switch to usage credits on June 23.

  • June 12 suspension — billing frozen

US export-control directive suspended Fable 5 worldwide June 12. The June 23 credit switch never happened — billing and access frozen for ~19 days while Anthropic worked on safety classifiers.

  • July 1 restoration — window reset to July 7

Fable 5 returned globally July 1 with new safety classifiers. Anthropic reset the included window: Pro/Max/Team plans include Fable 5 through July 7 (not the original June 22 end date).

  • July 8+ — usage credits era

After July 7, selecting Fable 5 in Claude apps draws usage credits at API rates ($10/$50 per M tokens). The model stays in the picker — only the flat-price inclusion ends. API and cloud channels unchanged.

  • September 2026 — Fable 5.1 era

Fable 5.1 released September 2, 2026 with adaptive thinking and 87.7% SWE-bench Verified. Same billing lanes as Fable 5 — credits on plans, API at list rates. Opus 5 became the Max default July 24.

Dates reflect Anthropic's published timeline as of September 2026. Enterprise terms may differ. The July 7 included window was a one-time post-restoration reset — do not assume future launches repeat the same schedule.

July 7 was a billing event, not a capability event

The Fable 5 that tops SWE-bench on July 7 is identical on July 8 — what changed is that you choose it deliberately instead of by default. Most users need a routing habit (Opus 5 for routine 80%, Fable 5 for hard 20%) more than a bigger budget.

How to use Fable 5 after the included window

Four levers that keep post-window costs predictable.

  • Prompt caching on API workloads

Cached input bills at $1/M — 90% off list. Stable system prompts and shared repo context should always be cached on Fable 5 API runs.

  • Batch mode for non-urgent jobs

Batch processing takes 50% off API rates. Route overnight evals and bulk analysis through batch — not interactive agent sessions.

  • Route routine work to Opus 5

Opus 5 at $5/$25 matches Fable 5 on many tasks at half the price and has no mandatory retention. Default to Opus; escalate hard agent work to Fable 5.

  • API starter credit for experiments

New Claude API accounts get a one-time ~$5 starter credit (no card required) that works with claude-fable-5. Beyond that, no ongoing free tier — third-party access keys are scams.
