Note: reports in late June claiming a June 18 restoration turned out to be false — an Anthropic employee confirmed on June 25 that the model was serving zero traffic at the time. The real restoration date is July 1.

What Anthropic said during the outage

From the June 12 statement:

"We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible."

At the time there were no hours, days, or regions — but the word “restore” turned out to be accurate. On June 30 Anthropic followed up with a Redeploying Claude Fable 5 statement after the Commerce Department withdrew the directive.

How the scenarios played out

During the outage we outlined three planning bands — days, weeks, or longer. Reality landed on weeks: legal and regulatory review took just under three weeks from suspension to withdrawal of the directive. The Seoul “coming days” comment on June 18 proved premature by about two weeks.

How this differs from “how long until June 22?”

The June 22 window was about billing — when Fable 5 would leave included subscription usage. The June 12 suspension removed the model entirely. Post-restoration, Anthropic reset the billing terms: Fable 5 is included in up to 50% of weekly caps through July 7, 2026, then moves to usage credits.

See Fable 5 after June 22 for billing mechanics.

What changed on return

Fable 5 came back with new safety classifiers that block over 99% of reported exploit attempts. Side effect: some routine coding and debugging requests temporarily fall back to Claude Opus 4.8 while Anthropic tunes false positives.
