Resolved — Fable 5 restored July 1, 2026
Why was Claude Fable 5 unavailable?
For 19 days — June 12 to July 1, 2026 — Anthropic disabled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every customer worldwide under a US government export-control directive. The controls have been lifted and Fable 5 is back. Here is the full record of what happened, and what changed in the restoration.
When did Fable 5 come back?
July 1, 2026 — restored globally.
The US Department of Commerce withdrew the export controls on June 30, and Anthropic redeployed Fable 5 worldwide the next day — with updated safety classifiers that block the reported exploit in over 99% of attempts.
- Where it's back: the Claude Platform (API), Claude.ai apps, Claude Code, and Cowork; AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry are being re-enabled as quickly as possible.
- Billing after the return: Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans include Fable 5 within up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, 2026 — then it moves to usage credits.
- One caveat: the new classifiers temporarily route some routine coding and debugging requests to Opus 4.8 while Anthropic reduces false positives.

What to do now that it's back
The suspension is over, but the return came with new mechanics worth handling deliberately:
- Re-enable claude-fable-5 in your API config, Claude Code, and Cursor — and remove any hard-coded suspension workarounds.
- Keep the circuit breaker: the new classifiers temporarily route some routine coding requests to Opus 4.8, so log requested vs served model.
- Mind the July 7 cliff: included plan usage (up to 50% of weekly limits) ends July 7, 2026 — after that Fable 5 bills via usage credits.
- Route high-volume, routine work to Sonnet 5 ($2/$10 intro) and reserve Fable 5 ($10/$50) for the hardest tasks — the price gap is 5x.
