Why Was Claude Fable 5 Unavailable? Complete Guide (2026)
Claude Fable 5 was unavailable June 12 – July 1, 2026 due to a US export-control directive — restored worldwide on July 1 after the directive was withdrawn. Full story inside.

Four days after launch, Claude Fable 5 vanished from every picker — not because Anthropic ran out of GPUs, and not because the June 22 free window closed early. A US government export-control directive arrived on June 12 at 5:21 PM ET, and Anthropic disabled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every customer worldwide. Nineteen days later, it came back.
Update — July 1, 2026: Fable 5 is back worldwide. The US Commerce Department withdrew the export-control directive on June 30, and access was restored on July 1 across the Claude API (
claude-fable-5), Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Cowork. Through July 7, Pro/Max/Team plans include Fable 5 in up to 50% of the weekly usage cap; after that it moves to usage credits at API pricing ($10/$50 per million tokens). Live status: /is-fable-5-back · Full story: Claude Fable 5 is back.

What happened — in order
- June 9 — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launch publicly on the API and included on paid Claude plans through June 22.
- June 12, 5:21 PM ET — Anthropic receives a directive under US national-security export controls: suspend access for any foreign national, anywhere, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
- June 12–13 — Anthropic cannot reliably verify citizenship in real time → global suspension for all customers, not just non-US users.
- June 13, 00:50 UTC — Claude Status posts an incident (Monitoring): "We've suspended access to Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5."
Opus 4.8, Sonnet, Haiku, and the rest of Claude are unaffected. This is a model recall, not Claude being down.
When did Fable 5 come back?
July 1, 2026. For weeks Anthropic's only public commitment was the June 12 statement: "We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible."
The resolution came in two steps:
- June 30, 2026 — the US Commerce Department withdrew the export-control directive; Anthropic published Redeploying Claude Fable 5.
- July 1, 2026 — Fable 5 restored worldwide: API, Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork. AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry are being re-enabled as fast as possible.
The restored model ships with new safety classifiers (blocking 99%+ of reported exploit attempts); some routine coding/debugging requests temporarily fall back to Opus 4.8 while Anthropic tunes false positives.
Not the same as June 22
| June 22 window (planned) | June 12 suspension (resolved July 1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Billing: subscription stops including Fable 5 | Legal: export-control directive |
| Who | Paid plan subscribers' included allowance | Everyone, including API |
| Can you call the model? | After June 23, yes — via credits | Offline globally until July 1, 2026 |
| Current rule | Superseded: included in up to 50% of weekly caps through July 7 | Resolved — directive withdrawn June 30 |

What Anthropic said about the trigger
The directive, per Anthropic, was triggered by concern that Fable 5 could be bypassed or jailbroken. Anthropic's own assessment: the public demonstrations involved small numbers of known, minor vulnerabilities — the kind other frontier models also exhibit — and do not constitute a broad universal jailbreak.
Anthropic complied with the directive but disagrees with the standard that "a narrow potential jailbreak in a specific domain should trigger recall of a deployed commercial model." If applied industry-wide, Anthropic argues, it would effectively halt frontier model deployment.
Secondary reporting (e.g. that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent the letter, or that the government previously tried to block launch) has not been confirmed line-by-line in Anthropic's statement — treat those as reportedly, not as fact.
What to do now that it's back
- Re-enable
claude-fable-5in production — API, Claude Code, and Cursor all serve it again. See Fable 5 vs Opus 4.8 for when the gap actually matters. - Keep the circuit breaker — the new safety classifiers can temporarily route routine requests to Opus 4.8, so log requested vs served model.
- Mind the billing window — included subscription usage (up to 50% of weekly caps) ends July 7, 2026; after that, usage credits at $10/$50 per million tokens.
Bottom line
Fable 5 launched June 9, was globally suspended June 12 over export controls, and was restored worldwide on July 1, 2026 after the directive was withdrawn — 19 days offline. Bookmark /is-fable-5-back for live status. More: how long it was unavailable · Fable 5 pricing · what changed on return
