Is Claude Fable 5 Coming Back? Yes — Restored July 1, 2026

Everyone wanted a date. Now there is one: July 1, 2026.

Claude Fable 5 was globally suspended on June 12, 2026, and the question "is Fable 5 coming back?" outranked pricing and benchmarks in Google question suggestions for weeks. The answer is now definitive: yes — it came back on July 1.

Update — July 1, 2026: Fable 5 is back worldwide. The US Commerce Department withdrew the export-control directive on June 30, Anthropic published Redeploying Claude Fable 5, and access returned on July 1 across the Claude API (claude-fable-5), Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Cowork. Through July 7, Pro/Max/Team plans include Fable 5 in up to 50% of the weekly usage cap; after that it moves to usage credits at API pricing ($10/$50 per million tokens). What Anthropic said during the suspension

From the June 12 statement:

"We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible."

For weeks that was the full public commitment — no hours, days, or regions. The word "restore" turned out to be accurate: on June 30 the Commerce Department withdrew the directive, and Anthropic followed with Redeploying Claude Fable 5.

June 18 (historical): At a press conference in Seoul, Anthropic's Managing Director of International Chris Ciauri said Fable 5 could become available again in the "coming days." The actual restoration took about two more weeks.

June 15 (historical): Business Today and other outlets reported Anthropic executives meeting White House officials to discuss the Fable 5 ban. Those negotiations culminated in the June 30 withdrawal of the directive.

What we will not do

  • Invent an ETA ("back next Tuesday")
  • Scrape rumor tweets as fact
  • Promise email subscribers a date we cannot verify

How the scenarios resolved

During the outage we outlined three bands — days, weeks, or longer. Reality landed on weeks: just under three weeks from suspension (June 12) to the directive's withdrawal (June 30) and restoration (July 1).

Is Fable 5 back yet?

Yes. As of July 1, 2026:

  • Fable 5 appears in Claude app model pickers again
  • API calls to claude-fable-5 work ($10/$50 per million tokens)
  • Claude Code and Cowork have it enabled; AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry are being re-enabled
  • Mythos 5 remains limited to approved US organizations under Project Glasswing — no public access

One caveat: the restored Fable 5 ships with new safety classifiers, and some routine coding or debugging requests temporarily fall back to Claude Opus 4.8 while Anthropic tunes false positives. See Fable 5 vs Opus 4.8 for how the two compare.
