Claude Fable 5 Pricing — $10/$50 per M Tokens Explained
Fable 5 pricing: $10 input / $50 output per million tokens, 2x Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Subscription terms, API credits, prompt caching, and cost-per-task examples. Calculator on our pricing page.

Fable 5 pricing is simple on paper and painful in production: $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output tokens — exactly 2× Claude Opus 4.8, and 2× Claude Opus 5, which launched July 24, 2026 at the same $5/$25. That ratio held from launch through the June 12 suspension and is unchanged after the July 1, 2026 restoration.
Update — July 27, 2026: Two things changed since this post was written. July 20: Max and Team Premium now include Fable 5 permanently in up to 50% of the weekly usage cap; Pro and Team Standard bill through usage credits at API pricing ($10/$50 per million tokens). July 24: Claude Opus 5 shipped at $5/$25 — the same price as Opus 4.8, half of Fable 5, and ahead of Fable 5 on most published benchmarks. Compare the two on Fable 5 vs Opus 5.

Fable 5 API pricing (per million tokens)
| Model | Input | Output | vs Opus 4.8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5 | $10 | $50 | 2× |
| Claude Opus 5 (July 24, 2026) | $5 | $25 | same as 4.8 |
| Claude Opus 4.8 | $5 | $25 | baseline |
| Claude Sonnet 4.6 | lower tier | lower tier | daily driver |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | lowest tier | lowest tier | volume |
Modifiers that apply to Fable 5, Opus 5, and Opus 4.8 alike:
- Prompt caching: ~90% off repeated input tokens
- Batch API: 50% off all tokens for async jobs
- Safeguard fallback: if Fable 5 routes to Opus 4.8 on cybersecurity/biology prompts, you pay Opus rates, not Fable rates
Subscription vs API: what “included” means
Anthropic’s June 9 launch promised Fable 5 included on paid Claude plans through June 22 — not unlimited forever. The June 12 suspension froze that plan, and the July 1 restoration reset the terms twice more. The current structure, set on July 20, 2026: Max and Team Premium include Fable 5 permanently in up to 50% of the weekly usage cap; Pro and Team Standard bill through usage credits at API rates. Standard Enterprise seats have no included allowance at all.
How much does Fable 5 cost in practice?
Reddit threads and early benchmarks cited $30+ per hard agentic task on Fable 5 versus cents on smaller models — not because the list price is wrong, but because output tokens stack on long runs.
Rough planning numbers:
| Workload | Typical relative cost |
|---|---|
| Short Q&A, one-shot edits | Low — Opus 5 or Opus 4.8 usually cheaper |
| Multi-file refactor, 30+ min agent | High — Fable 5 may still win per solved task |
| Batch overnight jobs | Medium — use Batch API 50% discount |

Fable 5 price vs Opus 4.8 — when 2× is worth it
From our Fable 5 vs Opus 4.8 guide:
- SWE-Bench Pro: 80.3% vs 69.2% — pay 2× when the extra 11 points prevent a failed agent run
- Routine edits: the $5/$25 tier wins, and since July 24, 2026 the strongest model in that tier is Opus 5, not Opus 4.8
- Safeguard domains: you already pay Opus rates — no Fable premium there
International pricing searches
Users search fable 5 price in india, preço, precio, and fable5价格 — the USD API list price is global; local Claude subscription prices follow Anthropic’s regional billing. We do not quote unofficial conversion rates.
Billing notes after the restoration
Fable 5 has been billable again since July 1, 2026 (model ID claude-fable-5). One quirk to watch: the new safety classifiers occasionally route ordinary coding/debugging requests to Opus 4.8 — those responses bill at Opus rates ($5/$25), not Fable rates. Track availability on /is-fable-5-back and /status.
Bottom line
Fable 5 pricing = $10/$50 per M tokens, 2× Opus 4.8 and 2× Opus 5, with caching and batch discounts. Since July 20, 2026 Max and Team Premium include Fable 5 permanently in up to 50% of the weekly cap; everyone else runs on usage credits. The premium is worth it on the hardest tasks — check it against Opus 5 at half the price before making Fable 5 a default.
