Creative writing prompts for Claude Fable 5

Six scaffolds for drafting, revising and matching a voice — the tasks where a model's ceiling shows up fastest.

What actually helps here

Paste a real sample of the voice you want rather than describing it. Adjectives like "punchy" or "literary" mean different things to a model than to you; 200 words of the actual target prose settles the argument. Then name what to avoid explicitly — the clichés of the genre you are writing in are exactly what a model reaches for by default.

The prompts

Fill in the bracketed slots, paste into any Claude app or the API. Written for Fable 5's goal-first style — they state the outcome and the constraints rather than scripting the steps.

  • Short story

Write a [genre] short story set in [setting], told from the perspective of [character]. Keep it under [400] words, with a clear beginning, turn, and ending. Tone: [folktale / noir / hopeful].
  • World-building brief

Create a world-building brief for [world name]: geography, political tension, one daily-life detail, and one unresolved mystery. Format as four short sections with headers.
  • Character voice test

Write the same 120-word monologue three times, in three distinct voices: [a weary mentor], [an overconfident rookie], [a quiet observer]. Label each version.
  • Dialogue-only scene

Write a dialogue-only scene between [character A] and [character B] who disagree about [topic]. No narration. End on an unspoken compromise.
  • Constrained poem

Write a [12]-line poem about [subject] that never names it directly. Use concrete imagery only — no abstract nouns.
  • Opening-paragraph critique

Critique the following opening paragraph for pacing, voice, and hook strength. Quote specific phrases, then suggest one rewrite. Text: [paste].

Getting more out of these

Two habits matter more than the wording. Replace every bracketed slot before you send — Fable 5 follows instructions literally, and an unfilled [topic] becomes part of the task. And resist adding "think step by step" or "show your reasoning": on Fable 5 that phrasing can trip the reasoning_extraction classifier and hand your request to Opus 4.8 instead.

Need something these do not cover?

The generator builds a full system prompt around your own task, autonomy level and output style, and hands back the API call to go with it.
